What to Have for Breakfast

July 1st, 2008 by Administrator

Firstly, you probably own a toaster and have toast for breakfast many a time, but have you ever though about the other things you can toast? Things like muffins, bagels, scotch pancakes, pitta breads and Pop Tarts – just to name a few.

Another firm favorite, for people with a sweet tooth, are waffles – you can either buy them in yourself, or make them with your own waffle maker. There is nothing better that getting up in the morning, helping yourself to a plate of waffles covered in maple syrup, or Belguim chocolate.

Eggs are another favorite to have for breakfast, whether it be scrambled, poached or an omelet. Make sure you have a nice warm skillet to cook the eggs with and make yourself a nice hearty breakfast.

Lastly let’s look at some healthy breakfast ideas, you may need some plastic containers (or cookware with lids that seal well) to put your muesli (or other cereal) and fruit in, especially if you eat breakfast on the go, or take it to work to eat. Many people when they get up think that it seems to be far too early to think about breakfast and you don’t want it to spill everywhere on route.

Then of course, you can always be ultra healthy and start the day with a fruit smoothie or milkshake and start getting a head start on the five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. You’ll need a good blender or smoothie maker. Also a fresh fruit salad can accompany many cereals, bagels and pancakes, or other combinations to make a healthier breakfast.

You have lots of choices of what to have breakfast everyday, so why not eat something different every morning and enjoy the variety. You never know, you might discover something that you like even more than you are eating now,

The Secrets to a Perfect Marinade

June 23rd, 2008 by Administrator

A marinade can make everyday meal, something like a meal from a posh restaurant. Yes the taste and the texture of the meat after getting a marinade just right, is one of life’s pleasures that’s for sure!

Marinating meat doesn’t have to be done 24 hours before hand, especially if you are using wine, juice, vinegar, salt or alcohol, as these will soak into the meat too much and overpower it, so two hours is the recommended marinating time for marinades with these ingredients.

If you crave the melt in the mouth tender meat taste (whether it’s beef, pork, lamb, venison, poultry, or fish) and don’t want to wait the twenty four hours (or even the 2 hours mentioned already), then I’d recommend tenderizing the meat first. In fact, I use this kitchen appliance - the Deni Circular 49 Blade Meat Tenderizer - MT149, which has sharp stainless steel blades that tenderize the meat, making it both quicker to absorb the marinade and cook.

Once you have tenderized the meat, you need to mix the meat and marinade together, place in a container and put in the fridge. A couple of pointers here, never leave the marinade at room temperature, and never use a metal container to marinade the meat in, as some ingredients can react with metal, especially aluminum and cast iron.

The best thing to put a marinade in is a sealed plastic bag, as this can be shook, and turned over during the marinating process to ensure all the meat is covered and the marinade soaks evenly in.

I often just marinade meat for half an hour, and it still tastes divine, so if you are anything like me, and don’t plan your meals a day in advance, then half an hour is an okay time to marinate meat for. If you have time to marinade it longer, then you might get some extra flavor, but if you tenderize the meat (with a kitchen appliance like the the Deni Circular 49 Blade Meat Tenderizer - MT149) beforehand then any extra time really isn’t necessary.

Lastly when you cook up the marinated meat make sure that you treat it as you would any raw meat, and that you discard any unused marinade. Tempting as it may seem to keep the marinade it has been in contact with raw meat, so it needs to be thrown away and not reused.

Your Kitchen Knives and Knife Sets

June 16th, 2008 by Administrator

Kitchen knifes come in many different shapes and sizes, small ones for cutting fruit, large ones for cutting vegetables, serrated ones for cutting bread, ones for slicing meat and curved ones for fruits and cheeses. The one thing that all knives have in common is the fact that they will go blunt at some point or other.

Some people say that you should buy your kitchen knives separately, which will cost you a lot more than if you buy them in a set. They say this because they think you get the best quality of knife if you pick and choose. This is a lot of rubbish, have you ever seen a chef who does not have a set of matching knives? No, they may have the odd one or two that different to their main set, but for the most, they stick to a set of knives that they trust.

There are some very good and very expensive sets of knives out there, but to have a decent set for your kitchen, you do not have to spend lots of money, going for the sets that a professional chef would buy. You can get excellent sets from local shops or of off the internet, from sites like Chumbadeals.com.

I have had a look at some of the knife sets available on Chumbadeals.com and one of my favorites has to be the Rogers 5033 33-Piece Kitchen Set. With this set you don’t just get knives that do not need sharpening, you also get a thirteen piece measuring cup set, a five piece nylon kitchen tool set and a wooden storage block.

Now I know I’ve said that all knives go blunt eventually, but with advances in materials for blades and handles, your knives will last a lot longer these days without having to be sharpened. One of the main things to look for, is the fact that the handle of your kitchen knives should not hold the blade by being glued into place, but should be held by a riveted design.

You should always make sure that when you are using your knives on a chopping board, and not directly on a kitchen surface, as this will blunt them. Try to buy knives that have double edged blades and have a good grip, with a nice finger guard. Another thing to note, is the fact that you should wipe down your knives directly after use and not leave them lying in washing-up water. Certain washing-up liquids will dull and even rust the blades. When it comes to dishwashers, personally I would not put my kitchen knives in them at all.

Most of all be careful when using your knives and have fun in the kitchen.

Cooking Fast Food at Home

June 2nd, 2008 by Administrator

hamilton Beach Deep FryerForget over fried chicken, chips that have be warmed one time too many, or the queues that you have to endure to buy this lack luster fried food. I’m not going to say don’t eat deep fried in this article, au contraire everyone deserves a treat and most people (and kids) love the taste of deep fried food. Just don’t do it everyday!

The secret to making great deep fried food is having a good recipe (or imagination) and a good deep fryer. Perhaps your kids aren’t fans of vegetables – you can beat your bottom dollar that they will like deep fried zucchini and cauliflower in batter. Then you can use the old well ‘you liked them in batter, so you can eat them without it’ trick.

Think about it, even when you get a Chinese takeaway, you get spring rolls, deep fried seaweed, and wontons that you could make at home! Okay so sometimes the point of getting a takeaway is so you don’t have to cook, but imagine the satisfaction of cooking something far superior than the takeaway (home cooked food always tastes better anyway) and the satisfied looks and tummies from the rest of your family.

Now, if you don’t have a deep fryer already, depending on the size of your brood, I would recommend the Hamilton Beach 35020 8-Cup Cool Touch Deep Fryer for the smaller family and the Hamilton Beach 35030 3-Liter Deep Fryer for the bigger broods, so that you can deep fry everything all at once, rather than doing it in batches.

If you’d like some inspiration as what to cook in your deep fryer, then visit Allrecipes.com just looking at the first few recipes will make your mouth water, and make your deep fryer one of your favorite kitchen appliances, it certainly has become one of ours.

Preserving Your Food and Creating More Room

May 27th, 2008 by Administrator

Once we have done a good shop, we have to pack away what we have bought. All the usual places, for tinned foods and packets of things, are taken up and everything is in its usual place. Then it comes to the frozen or refrigerated food stuffs, I’m sure it is the same the world over, but I always seem to have trouble fitting everything in to the freezer and over loading the fridge.

The packaging of a lot of the food we buy, is usually bigger than is needed or is an awkward shape, which does not really help when trying to store the food away. Sometimes we need to keep bits of the packaging, as it has cooking instructions or they have a good idea on them for a recipe, but we don’t need to keep the packaging at all really.

This is where a good vacuum sealer comes in handy, the amount of room you can save in the freezer compartment, when using a vacuum sealer, can be the difference between an extra weeks worth of meals, or going to the shops all over again. Keeping the part of the packaging you need or want is also viable, as you can place it in with whatever you are sealing up, this can also help with identifying your chicken bits, from your turkey bits or anything else that you can’t remember, what it is.

People don’t really think of a vacuum sealer as a kitchen appliance, but it is and it’s a good one to have. To preserve your food, you can find an excellent range of vacuum sealers, food saver bags and containers at Chumbadeals.com. They are all designed to keep your food as fresh as the day you bought it.

The Freshlock Turbo 2 Vacuum Sealer-1830 is a kitchen appliance that no home should be without, its not big and clumsy, its easy to use and will save you space in your fridge and freezer. For food stuffs that don’t need to be chilled, you could go for the traditional route and use the good old plastic container. Again from Chumbadeals.com is a 48 piece, Super Seal 448XL Cranbury Food Saver Set.

Whichever way you choose to go though, you will be surprised at how much room you will have to store more of your favorite foods, whilst keeping them fresh and tasty.

The Search For The Perfect Cup of Coffee

May 18th, 2008 by Administrator

Almost everybody loves a good cup of fresh coffee, from freshly ground coffee beans, we would all agree that the instant coffees are nothing in comparison and never really seem to hit the spot. So when we enter a shop and go hunting for those special ground beans, some of us look at them and think, why don’t we just get the whole bean and grind it ourselves, then we think that it is too much hassle.

The thing is, it doesn’t have to be any hassle at all, the amount of good coffee grinders on the market, these days is phenomenal. The best ones are obviously electric, saving your hands and wrists a whole lot of bother, some are self cleaning, some will do fifteen cups at a time and some will do you just enough to give you your perfect cup of coffee.

Then you have to look at some of the best kitchen appliances on the market, of course I’m talking about the coffee making machines, or how about your own cappuccino and espresso machine. These don’t have to be great big things, that you see in café’s, you can get them just the right size for your kitchen and even get one of these kitchen appliances that will make just espresso, cappuccino or a normal cup of fresh coffee.

At Chumbadeals there is a brilliant range of espresso and cappuccino machines, an eye catching example is the Hamilton Beach 40729 Cappuccino and Espresso maker, this has pod attachments that work with 15 bars of pressure to create superior espresso cream, a water tank that is easily removed and an easy stream frother.

For freshly ground coffee like you would get in a café, you can’t go wrong with these good looking kitchen appliances, this means we can all have our perfect cup of coffee.

The Movies at Home

May 7th, 2008 by Administrator

My wife and I decided we would have a comfy night in, with a bottle of wine, some chocolate and a good film. There is definitely something missing, we both thought, after a short time looked at her, she looked at me and together, we said, ‘Popcorn’.

After all what is a trip to the cinema or a home movie experience, without the popcorn? I’ll tell you, it’s no experience at all.

We decided that one of us had to delay proceedings, leave and go to a shop to buy some. We decided we would have a butter based popcorn and a sweeter one, so of I went in search of somewhere near, that could sell me the delights, we where looking for.

When I got back home, I had two bags of ready made, buttered and sweetened popcorn, two packets of quick microwave popcorn and a bag of corns you had to pop yourself. Which lot do you think we went for?

Actually we done the lot, but only because we lost interest in the film and started to bet on which popcorn, had the most kernels left, after we had eaten all the bits, that it was possible to eat without cracking our teeth.

What we eventually decided was it would be cheaper, more fun, even quicker to buy a kitchen appliance to do the job for us, or in layman’s terms a popcorn maker. Seeing as though I had just filled my face with popcorn and had already been out, I looked on the internet, there I came across Chumbadeals.com. I did not have to look far actually, because they had an offer on the first page of the site, for just what we were looking for.

The Presto 04820 Poplite Hot Air Corn Popper looked like a great machine. It’s not like the microwave, where you will set alight the bag, if you leave it in there for too long, the ready made stuff, that is basically too sickly, and you don’t have the hassle of wrecking a sauce pan doing it by yourself, with kernels that can take an eye out.

Buying a kitchen appliance that everyone in the family can use, is not just fun when you want to sit and have a movie experience, its good if you want the kids to do something for you as well. Only kidding there, but it is fun, safe and clean.

We’re getting one and having a look to see what else on Chumbadeals and other sites, can do to make our lives just that little bit easier.

Fun with Kids in the Kitchen

April 22nd, 2008 by Administrator

Most of us know how much kids love messing about with food and helping in the kitchen, so we should encourage them to do this, with supervision you could even help them become the next Gordon Ramsay or Raymond Blanc, two very well known European chefs.

One of the most fun things to do with your children in the kitchen, is baking cookies. Everyone including the kids will love the result, as long as you keep an eye on what they put in them and you can even teach them about the importance of safety in the kitchen, while they are having fun and learning to cook.

Tips on How to Store Your Kitchen Appliances

April 14th, 2008 by Administrator

With the price of small kitchen appliances being so affordable these days (especially at websites like ChumbaDeals.com), our kitchens surfaces can end up becoming too overcrowded with all the latest kitchen gadgets and gizmos, so here are some tips on storage and where to put them in your kitchen.

First of all, you have to get a little ruthless, as I recommend chucking out any kitchen appliances that aren’t working properly. For kitchen appliances that do work, and you haven’t used in the past year take them to a charity shop.
